Who is the RSA for?

The Romney Sheep Alliance is for any Romney sheep enthusiast, from the fiber artist who loves working with Romney fiber to the small hobby flock of five ewes to a large production operation with hundreds of ewes. Anyone and everyone is welcome, so long as you enjoy working with Romney sheep or their products. Finally, the last group the RSA serves is the Romney breed and the sheep themselves. The RSA acts as a voice for them to allow their contributions to individual shepherds, fiber artists, consumers, and the sheep industry not go unnoticed.

How do I become a member?

You can become either a Junior member or Regular Member of the RSA by filling out the online Membership Application, or by filling out a membership application and mailing it to the Secretary.

How do I register my sheep?

You can print and fill out the RSA registration application and work order form, or fill out the online registration form and submit your information, as well as pay, online.

My sheep are currently registered with a different association, how do I register them with the RSA?

Any purebred Romney currently registered in a different purebred flock book can apply for RSA registration by filling out the Open Registration Application online, or by printing out the work order form and mailing it to the registrar.  Copies of current registration forms (front & back) must be emailed or submitted via the online form to the registrar with proper fees paid.  You must be an RSA member in good standing to submit an application for open registration.

Why should I register my sheep?

Registering purebred sheep with a breed organization allows purebred sheep genetics to be tracked and maintained. Registration papers are also a requirement at many competitive shows for those wanting to exhibit their animals.  It also allows pedigree records to be kept and used as a tool for breeders to use in selection of breeding stock and what lines work for their management and goals. Purebred sheep with integrous registration papers can also bring a higher premium when it comes time to sell stock.

How does the RSA differentiate the breeder from and the owner?

The breeder is the owner of the animal at the time of breeding. The owner is the owner of the animal at the time of lambing. If you do not own the sire then you most include a certificate of breeding filled out by the owner of the ram. If you own both the sire and dam, you are the owner and the breeder. (example: You purchase a bred ewe. The person the animal was purchased from is the breeder. You are the owner.)

How do I transfer a sheep into my name?

Accepted Answer

To transfer an animal into your name via regular mail, fill out your information on the back of the registration paper of the animal you are transferring. Include a work order form and correct fees, then mail it to the registrar.

To transfer an animal into your name online, fill out your information on the back of the registration paper of the animal you are transferring. Then, scan the registration paper (front & back) and upload the file through the online form or and pay your transfer fee online.

Who pays the transfer fee; buyer or seller?

Accepted Answer

Either the buyer or seller can pay the transfer fee. This is to be determined privately between the two parties and the RSA has no stake in this decision.
